The exhibition and catalogue showcase the broad range of artwork by Czech paper engineer, children's book illustrator, and graphic designer Vojtech Kubasta (1914-1992), and celebrates his life's work with paper, pencil, and scissors. Focusing on his creativity and diversity, more than 100 objects highlight Kubasta's passion for (among other things) the city of Prague, the composer Mozart, and the wonders of childhood. Woven throughout is the social and political climate in which he worked, first under the Nazi occupation, and then under Soviet domination. The Prague Uprising of May 5-9, 1945 against the Germans is spotlighted in several of his works. Working behind the Iron Curtain, Kubasta continued to illustrate books, advertisements, and ephemera. He "paper-engineered" an extraordinary number of pop-up books, and it was said of him, "He was born with a pencil in his hand." Best known for his puppet theater-like pop-up books, Kubasta's background in architecture and puppetry is evident in his imaginative children's books and advertising material, revealing the artist's joie de vivre and sly wit. Niet zo maar boeken zijn vijf uitgaven van L. J. Veen, Wageningen, die een Nederlandse bewerking maakte van een uitgave van Artia, Praag. Deze boeken zijn wonderboeken. Je slaat de bladzijden open en er ontstaan hele tonelen. Figuren maken zich los van het papier, huizen, kastelen, mensen en dieren komen te voorschijn en vormen met zijn allen een poppenhuisje. Je kunt er ook nog mee schuiven zodat je het verhaal zelf kunt illustreren. De uit karton geknipte figuren zijn gemaakt naar tekeningen van V. Kubasta. De vertaling en bewerking van de verhalen zijn van L. N. van Veen-Niessingh. De sprookjes die op zo'n merkwaardige manier geïllustreerd zijn, zijn maar kort. Ze zijn alle vijf van Hans C. Andersen, namelijk De Vliegende Koffer, De Gelaarsde Kat, Hoe een Arme Soldaat Koning werd, Het Herderinnetje en De Schoorsteenveger en De Standvastige Tinnen Soldaat. De boeken zijn, zou men haast zeggen, meer nog om te kijken dan om te lezen.

Le pegó a las páginas abiertas y creó escenas enteras. Las cifras se desprenden del papel, casas, castillos, personas y animales emergen y forman todos juntos una casa de muñecas. Usted también puede unirse a empujarse para poder ilustrar la historia. El corte de figuras de cartón se hacen a los dibujos de V. Kubasta. La traducción y adaptación de las historias de L. N. van Veen-Nies Singh. Los cuentos de hadas ilustrados de una manera tan notable, pero corto. Son las cinco de Hans C. Andersen, a saber, el tronco del vuelo, El gato con botas, ¿Cómo un pobre soldado era el rey, La pastora y el deshollinador y El soldadito de plomo. Los libros son, casi se podría decir que más que ver que leer.

Not just books, five editions of L. J. Veen, Wageningen, who made a Dutch adaptation of an edition of Artia, Prague. These books are wonderful books. You hit the open pages and created whole scenes. Figures detach themselves from the paper, houses, castles, people and animals emerge and form all together a dollhouse. You can also join push yourself so you can illustrate the story. The cut out of cardboard figures are made to drawings of V. Kubasta. The translation and adaptation of the stories of L. N. van Veen-Nies Singh. The fairy tales illustrated in such a remarkable way, but short. They are all five of Hans C. Andersen, namely, The Flying Trunk, Puss in Boots, How a poor soldier was King, The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep and The Steadfast Tin Soldier. The books are, one might almost say, more to watch than to read.
